For the sake of old times, and record-keeping

Farewells are such a clichéd but integral part of life. The farewell itself might be acceptable, but people insist on saying the same things over and over again. Ignoring a book I am supposed to read for a dangerous paper, I'll try to gather my thoughts and compose something coherent.
A span of four years is-well, a long span, honestly. Now I look back and I am amazed that I lasted such a long time in a place with which I have lots and lots of compatibility issues. Still, mine is an exceptionally sad existence, for I can confess that I have no feeling of belonging whatsoever. No sense of attachment to the place I have called my college for such a long time, for sake of a better word.
All in all, the number of people who made it bearable can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and the number of teachers I intend to remember twenty years into the future can be counted on one alone.
I might have learned some important things there, but I have forgotten them among the load of completely useless things I was forced to cram in my mind. Besides, I realized that quiet people will always be quiet, so it is better for them to find a corner where they can be comfortably so.
Lest I become too ungrateful, I should mention that it was this place that introduced me to a language I personally place on the same pedestal as Urdu, even though it does not have a Mir of its own.
Most importantly, I actually found some people who can tolerate me for really long periods of time. What's more, they tolerate me with patience and compassion. They almost understand the entire range of  oddities, complexities and grave problems that make up Spook, such as: No one can sip through Spook's straw. Spook can not come to college every day. Spook must laugh at every senseless, lame or awkward joke. Spook is really, actually, seriously slow.
Still, they understand, and what is most amazing, some of them have a way of summing things up that lead to an unexpected increase in Spook's self knowledge.
The extremely refined cosmological constant may be considered an evidence of a divine entity, but I consider the case of my having friends who share my tastes a stronger proof of His existence.
There is one who has been a constant source of knowledge and guidance all these years. She is the person I normally turn to when I need to understand anything pertaining to science, maths or literature. She is the only soft hearted critic in the entire world, I think. The lurking danger of a future in a separate place has shown me that her absence will be detrimental to my tastes: in a couple of days I have gone form the usual sanam mera sukhan soon aashna hay and teri yay kam nigaahi neemcha hay type to this class of poetry:

Still, with this taste, there is a real danger of me publishing a book and becoming really, really famous. She might be sorry for ditching me, then.
Then there is one whom I usually pick arguments with. We argue for hours on end, on every sort of topic, from chess to fiction and from relativity to human rights. We think in astonishingly similar ways and have awkwardly similar hopes and fears. We both get obsessed and un-obsessed with the strangest things as quickly and as often as other people get with new fashions. I  might add that we have plans for the future together. After saving some money through the usual dreary jobs, we shall buy a van and run it on one of the local routes. I'll be the drive and she'll be the conductor because she enjoys shouting 'Sadddaarr Saddaarr Saddaarr'.
There is one, whom I might have been able to befriend, had I been able to ditch the critic, though the two of us do not have much in common, apart from a love of books. Also, there is the vast difference of class between us, which always reminds me of Iqbal: kargas ka jahan or hay, shaheen ka jahan or. The problem solver through and through. She can be described as a modern day Asghari with a gold medal. One that she did NOT acquire through rote learning, contrary to the belief of the general and unavoidably misogynistic public. In one of the toughest disciplines of engineering. In one of the most competitive places around. It is only logical that I be in awe of her.
There is another one who  has done it ALL: Watched every movie. Visited every place in the city. Aced every paper. Seriously, she has more common sense than three normal people or ten Spooks combined together. Her tastes and opinions are absolutely the best in everything, from shirts to shoes to public dealing to movies. Besides, she can teach slow students,as I still remember that she patiently explained a circuit with dozens of amplifiers to me a couple of hours before the exam. Even though I disliked amplifiers, I reproduced it nicely in that paper, and that is in no way the only instance of her teaching me.
There is one with whom I have discussed books and books, in the middle of dangerous classes.
Then there are some whom I constantly have to lecture to take it easy. I have often been worried about their blood pressure, more than I am ever worried about my assignments.
I remember recommending Georgette Heyer to one, and Suzanne Collins to another.
Then there is a bus fellow. I don't reply to 80% of her queries about my whereabouts.
With a lot of them, I have laughed and joked and talked during seemingly infinite lectures. With others, during the dreadful hours before the exams, in this common room and that.
There are some who shall not be graduating this year. The saat number psychoanalyst. The one whose cell number I still have with the 'gr' tag in my mobile. Her blog inspired me to create one in the first place. The one whom a friend calls 'shair o shaiiri wali larki.' I spent a short time with them, but they are my friends, nevertheless. Even though I am one of the laziest persons around, and particularly bad at keeping in touch.
Some of them are officially my best enemies forever. Official or not, all of them have been a source of strength, common sense and inspiration and a breath of fresh air, in a place particularly devoid of all these things. To borrow Bilbo's words, I don't know half of them half as well as I should like. Still, I can safely say that my girls  are some of the finest of the specie, and I have nothing but the highest hopes and the absolutely best wishes for them.

The Girl who Cried Error

Although I staunchly refuse to learn anything practical, important or serious from life in general and my life in particular, there are some observations I have made over the years. One of these deals with the fear of failure, which ought to have a proper name in my opinion.
Now it might be an unusual thing to say but I believe that failure is, for the majority of population, beneficial. It introduces human beings to humbleness, which all but very few of people I have come across direly need. It is one of the best teachers around, for there is no better way to learn something then to attempt it and fail in the attempt.
Forgive me, my reader, if I seem to be generalizing too much. What I mean to say is that there is no better way to learn programming than to write code with errors. Wait, there is: to write code with bugs. Oh, the joy of inserting print statements line by line! Though HDLs belong to a group of nice languages, their status cannot be compared to the eternally beloved C++, just because they do not possess the simple print statement.
I might have written something about a final year project some time ago. Thing is, it is a rather important and necessary part of my otherwise-devoid-of-important-things life. The poor thing might get a full post to itself one of these days.
So, as I was saying, there is a project and I am responsible for a part of it.To be honest, I am rather the I.T. girl of the team, the one who configures software and debugs problems related to the os, the underlying kernel and the io ports. Things that normal people consider too boring for their time.
Anyways, I have often observed that fear of failure can hold you back way more than actual failure can. Some time ago, I was climbing down a flight of stairs. There was a long wire in my way.Now it so happened that I was trying so desperately to avoid getting tangled in the wire that I actually slipped on the stairs and slided down some 5-6 steps.
A normal person might have been humiliated, I guess. Not yours truly. I just got up with my head held high, ignoring the pain in my knee and the dirt all over my clothes and said 'I am all right' to my mother in a reassuring tone.
Of course, normal people might be embarrassed if their mother would say in a shop loudly while looking at a pair of elegant shoes 'Dimagh durust hay! Dobara girna hya kia!'.
Again, yours truly is just irked,  not embarrassed.
So our project was put on hiatus due to a problem we supposedly had. The size of the data we had to process was larger than the memory block allocated by the underlying API. So I decided, of course, to change the default memory mapping of the system. I tried this, and I tried that, and nothing worked. By now I am qualified to write a book on '101 ways of changing memory map for API X'. It goes without saying that all these methods are unsuccessful, and almost all of them cause the processor to throw tons of error and hang.
Other steps taken by the persistent spook:
1. I bugged my team mates and told them that we might be stuck at this problem forever, when I am quite aware of a member's horror for infinite loops.
2.I dragged my team mates to a far away place in the sweltering heat of May and bugged some outsiders there. A nice person really tried to help us.
3. Then I tried to make some sense of the entire thing, something I absolutely despise. The only thing I am any good at are 'jugaars'; in fact, the entire project is nothing but a collection of jugaars.
Now that is a skill I might add to the list of my professional skills. Reminds me, I have a serious interview in a couple of days. The guys at that place better hire me, or I shall suffer from a broken heart. Need I remind anyone of he 'hell hath no fury....' saying? If they don't employ me, I'll have my revenge. When I am the commissioner of the city.
As for the mapping problem, there wasn't a solution because, as it turns out , there wasn't a problem at all. The default configuration worked like a charm, once I tried it, for in my over-zealous state, I had messed with it without any regard for the actual, physical memory of the system.
Tip for the future: before getting hyper about a problem, be sure to confirm that the problem exists in the real world.

A thing for fiction

'A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction'.
These days, I am left pondering the truth of this statement at times.
Writing fiction has always been a distant dream for me. Distant because at no point in my life have I possessed a skill for story telling. Its not as if I have never ever written a story; there must be about a dozen manuscripts amid the chaos I call my stuff. Thing is, they all have extremely boring and clichéd and predictable story lines. If presented in a competition, they tend to fall at a place that may range from n to exp^n.
Story reading, on the other hand, has been my *sole* interest in life, for the greater part of it. Story writing, on the other hand, still eludes me.
There has been an idea for a story in my mind for a couple of days, but I have not yet found the time to weave them in a story due the numerous ghams of  rozgar. (Hint: reference to the first requirement, as laid down by Woolf).
Why I should write the story down: Some loyal friends might be amused and entertained.
Why I should not: I was simply not meant to be a story teller. Sigh.
'A room of one's own' does seem like a nice find. I shall read it at first opportunity,as soon as that arrives.
P.S. It seems an unexpectedly awesome find, for I do not count myself a fan of Virginia Woolf or/and To the Lighthouse, her only work I have read so far.

The perks of parallel processing

Yesterday was a dukkhi day. Dukhi because sad simply falls short of the expressing our grief  and dismay require.
I might have mentioned it earlier, but let me emphasize this  again : The writer has an extraordinary talent for destruction, be it biryani or a beagle board that has the misfortune to fall in her hands.
Technically speaking, this is the middle of the end, since we are halfway through fyp. Sometimes I realize that I am going to miss my college enormously. The holidays, to be exact. How I am going to play truant in the future is a source of constant worry to me. I also picked up some like-minded and almost-as-dim-witted-as-me people there, who have always dissuaded me from suicidal plans, albeit half-heartedly.
On the day before yesterday, I was a happy elf. A free elf, almost. Working with a beagle board xm has been a very interesting and rewarding experience, and it has rekindled an old dream, of being an embedded system designer. I might even write a couple of posts about the general outlines for working with it, as well as the problems we encountered and are still encountering, provided that I can summon the energy.
This time, we decided to divide the work among our three selves. Being the person who finds the most faults with literally everything, I have been appointed as the official choota (sans the public dealing, thankfully). While the others watch and record videos and do interesting stuff, I try to impress people with the fact that a complete os can run on 5 V on a 3x3 inch board.
To the point now.
Thing is, parallel processing might be the thing for actual processors, but it certainly isn't for us. What doing 3 different things in parallel has brought us is the chance to get stuck at three different points simultaneously.
When working as a group, we usually have one problem at a time, so this is a new achievement for us. In a way.
Rants aside, I should document my problems.
As the icing on the cake, I received a new and strange 'kernel panic' error yesterday. Since then, my work is officially on standstill. Maybe I need to change my focus for a couple of days. Middlemarch might be a choice, for I am a fan of George Eliot and Dorothea's story can not be more tragic than mine.
